Well, there you have it. Sarah Palin “unlawfully abused her power as governor” by trying to have her former brother-in-law fired.

Investigator Stephen Branchflower, in a report by a bipartisan panel that investigated the matter, found Palin in violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain.

The inquiry looked into her dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walter Monegan, who said he lost his job because he resisted pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a bitter divorce with the governor’s sister. Palin says Monegan was fired as part of a legitimate budget dispute.

The panel found that Palin let the family grudge influence her decision-making even if it was not the sole reason Monegan was dismissed. “I feel vindicated,” Monegan said. “It sounds like they’ve validated my belief and opinions. And that tells me I’m not totally out in left field.”

This has now become a national embarrassment. John McCain picked a criminal as his running mate — a criminal!

If Palin has even an ounce of shame, she should withdraw from the race immediately. She’s been on stage at rallies for the past few days calling Barack Obama a terrorist when she’s an unethical criminal who used her office for personal gain.

Of course she won't resign. And, this will turn out to be a good thing for the Repugs. As Atrios says, "it always is." They have no shame and less intelligence.

Well, it didn't turn out that way for Spiro Agnew.

He has to resign when it was proven that he accepted bribes as governor of Maryland.

This is the same thing -- abuse of power for personal gain.

Back in Agnew's time, there was a shred of morality in the right wing and American politics. A slim thread that caused old Spiro to chuck it in. Alas, this is post-Bush America. Stolen elections. Wars for no reason. Lies. Stupidity that is celebrated. There is no longer any semblance of honor or morality. It is a new Christian cabal against all others. Have you ever met a fundie with any ethics?

"Have you ever met a fundie with any ethics?"

Sadly, not too often these days. Most of them delude themselves into believing that they are chosen by God.

I don't mean to knock religious people. Just so many that I've met personally have been abusive and otherwise deceptive. I learned this in Texas. Which is maybe why I still hate the Dallas Cowboys. I was young and naive then when I live there but I could not understand why the fundies lied to me over and over. I was puzzled. I've resigned now to it but it says so much why I see a similarity between Bush and Palin. They share that disregard, nay ignorance, or the truth. My feeling is that lying is not part of the ten commandments. It should be.

"My feeling is that lying is not part of the ten commandments."

I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic schools. I suggest that you read the Catechism on the 8th Commandment:

http://www.va/archive/catechism/p3s2c2a8.htm

Catholics believe that the 8th Commandment requires us to bear witness to the truth.

"The eighth commandment forbids misrepresenting the truth in our relations with others. This moral prescription flows from the vocation of the holy people to bear witness to their God who is the truth and wills the truth. Offenses against the truth express by word or deed a refusal to commit oneself to moral uprightness: they are fundamental infidelities to God and, in this sense, they undermine the foundations of the covenant."
